Kumamoto, Japan.

25|30 september, 2024

with Emmie & Birjiwan.

As soon as you enter Ryokan Sanga, you’ll just know.

In a secluded forest along a mountain stream exists a hidden sanctuary in the form of a traditional japanese inn - it’s an image straight out of a dream.

Late Summer at Ryokan Sanga is a special time. A gathering and harvesting of all the fruits and blooms of high summer before drawing inward for the quieter months to come. The fertility of the natural world pours in through every window, covering the outdoor onsen baths in a gently waving ceiling of leaves.

With tatami bedrooms, softly worn wooden floors, traditional architecture and multiple medicinal hot spring baths, the space alone is enough to melt back into the parts of the self you have turned away from for too long.

Our Late Summer Japanese Dream is a celebration and cultivation of all that has grown and blossomed so far over the year.

Inspired by the elegance and simplicity of ancient Japanese culture and the every changing scenery of the countryside, we will spend five precious days together deeply restoring and coming back to our bodies, our femininity and re-building our inner and outer luminosity.

We will soak in onsen baths, eat exquisite local and seasonal foods, practice kundalini and yin yoga, feminine taoist and tantric arts as well as explore together the lushious outdoors and our inmost landscapes through carefully curated poetry workshops and human design circles.

  • Birjiwan and Emmie met when the world went online in 2020 and immediately The melting pot of deep rest and yin with kundalini and feminine arts - shared interest in sensuality, beauty and receptivity

    A Japanese Connection
Emmie first travelled to Japan as a teenager, and has had the immense privilege of travelling the country for the past fifteen years, often with local friends as guides. While she currently resides in Tokyo, her favourite places are the quiet, the hidden and the mystical. The places that

Much of Emmie’s work is inspired by her time in Japan and it is an honour and a pleasure to share these practices in such a deeply healing land and culture.

time to write. Time to bathe and all the venus things.

  • Ryokan Sanga is situated in Kurokawa Onsen. A secluded, ethereal town nestled deep in nature. The whole town of Kurokawa Onsen functions like an ancient hot spring village. You'll feel transported, walking the tiny streets watching others pass by wearing yukata, wooden sandals and carrying cane baskets (and yes, you’ll have the opportunity to do the same if you wish)! It truly feels like a scene from another time.

There are a few ways to reach our location. If you are a confident driver we cannot recommend enough the experience of renting a car in Japan and driving around the countryside. Car rental services can easily be accessed in English and all you need is an international licence. Ryokan Sanga can be reached by car from Kumamoto or Fukuoka, with beautiful scenery along the way. Buses are also available if you prefer.

For those who prefer pure ease: The closest airport is Kumamoto, just a two hour flight from Tokyo, or 1hr 15min from Kansai (Osaka and Kyoto). We will arrange a shuttle bus to depart from Kumamoto airport around 2pm (to be confirmed) on our first day together for an additional fee of 5000 yen for anyone interested.

Please do let us know when booking if you would like to take this service.

  • While Japan is an incredible country with unexpected beauty around every corner, like many traditional and spiritual places in the world there is an over tourism issue, mostly caused by tourists sticking to the one set path of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Part of our decision to host this retreat in a less accessible location is to offer something truly special, restorative and otherwordly – and also to spend time in an area of Japan you may not feel confident exploring alone. We can assure you these trips into the quieter, secluded areas of Japan are something on a whole other level.

Kumamoto is a special place that retains a very deep connection to its ancient roots, surrounded by mountains, islands and sea. Mount Aso (an active volcano) blesses the entire area with natural and medicinal hot springs. The area is famous for mineral rich drinking water, as the earth here acts as a natural filter and remineralisation system.

Due to the incredible life force of the water and abundant nature of the area, Kumamoto is famous for the flavour of local ingredients including what is referred to as the mountain blessings: rice, vegetables and citrus fruits and sea blessings: prawns and sea bream fish.
