about kumamoto
While Japan is an incredible country with unexpected beauty around every corner, like many traditional and spiritual places in the world there is an over tourism issue, mostly caused by tourists sticking to the one set path of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
Part of our decision to host this retreat in a less accessible location is to offer something truly special, restorative and otherwordly – and also to spend time in an area of Japan you may not feel confident exploring alone. We can assure you these trips into the quieter, secluded areas of Japan are something on a whole other level.
Kumamoto is a magical place that retains a very deep connection to its ancient roots, surrounded by mountains, islands and sea. Mount Aso (an active volcano) blesses the entire area with natural and medicinal hot springs. The area is famous for mineral rich drinking water, as the earth here acts as a natural filter and remineralisation system.
Due to the incredible life force of the water and abundant nature of the area, Kumamoto is famous for the flavour of local ingredients including what is referred to as the mountain blessings: rice, vegetables and citrus fruits and sea blessings: oysters, prawns and sea bream fish. All of which you will eat daily on retreat.
